Mass cultivation of micro algae for biofuels and other useful products:

PERC has developed technology for mass cultivation of selected micro algae in open ponds and closed photobioreactors for biofuels, biofertilizer, cattle feed and other useful products. Parameters like nutrient addition, harvesting and processing have been standardized. Simple and cost effective harvesting technology (PHYCOFLOC) has been developed and being implemented in algal farms. A combination of open raceway ponds and bioreators has been developed to achieve maximum productivity which is economically viable. Economics has been worked out for large scale production of algae. PERC has developed a PMF technology to enhance algal productivity and oil content. PMF technology is ecofriendly, cost effective and easily scalable and xan be integrated with PBRs and open raceway ponds.

Energy from Sewage

PERC has developed technology and identified algal strains to effectively treat sewage and produce valuable algal biomass. Micro algae, being photosynthetic, utilize CO2 and evolve oxygen which initiates oxidation of organics in sewage by aerobic bacteria. The resultant degradation products form a rich source of nutrients for algal growth. Micro algae also remove nutrients like nitrates and phosphates thereby reducing eutrophication process. The algal biomass generated is further processed for bio-fuel generation.  PERC has visited several cities including Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai to assess quantum of sewage available for algal biomass generation and production of bio-fuels.  PERC is planning to setup pilot plants in different locations for sewage treatment using micro algae.

Bio-diesel from Algae:

Algal species producing higher oil at field level have been identified and successfully cultivated in open raceway ponds. The techniques of harvesting, extraction and transesterification have been standardized. WORLD'S FIRST PHYCOREMEDIATION PLANT

World's First Phycoremediation plant: Dr V Sivasubramanian, has set up the First Phycoremediation plant at SNAP Industry. Algal remediation technology helps in pH correction of the acidic effluent and complete reduction of sludge formation. SNAP is now a zero disposal company. The phycoremediation plant has been in operation from September 2006. The effluent generated by the industry is highly acidic and of very high TDS (40000 mg/L). The entire effluent is evaporated using slope tank with zero sludge formation. The algal biomass produced is used in Biofertilizer preparation and sold by the Company. .......(.more )
